Jobs Report: Good News For Engineers

With the recession far in the past and engineering jobs on the rise, employers in various industries are seeking skilled workers to fill the rising demand of engineering jobs that have opened up over the past few years. These 2012 job numbers have revealed good news for jobs seekers, who remain in demand and won’t have to struggle through arduous competition over a limited amount of positions.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, engineers held 1.6 million jobs in 2008, a number that is predicted to grow to 1.8 million by 2016. With an 11% increase in the total number of engineering jobs expected to be created in this same period, numerous engineering industries are beginning to see copious openings in positions. Among the rising careers that are predicted to grow heavily are:

Civil engineers

Predicted to grow the highest rate of all engineering jobs, with a 24% increase over the next four years. (67,600 jobs).

Jobs in construction will be on the rise as the demand for improved infrastructure increases. Roads, bridges, and buildings in particular will need updates and renovations, and with the increase in population there will be a demand for greater pollution control and other vital services.

Industrial Engineers

Civil engineering is expected to see a 14% (30,600 jobs) increase, and is still a largely growing field in its own right.

Jobs in the manufacturing sector have made a severe comeback in the past few years as demands in the military, healthcare, and transportation industries have increased. When combined with the new integration of Cloud systems (see report here) from the Information Technology sector, manufacturers and distributers are now seeing increased productivity and efficiency at their plants, a tool that has allowed for greater profits and expansion.

Mechanical Engineers

At a modest 6% (14,000 jobs), mechanical engineering jobs are still on the rise because of advances in the manufacturing and distribution industries.

Electrical Engineers

Lastly electrical engineering jobs are expected to rise 2% (3,000 jobs), a solid increase over the next few years. Telecommunications jobs are still in demand and with the continual rise in the programming and software development industries, who are heavily reliant on electrical power, electrical engineers are sure to keep up at a steady pace.

Good news for engineers

On top of the massive growth in these sectors, surveys show that 99% of the jobs that employers are offering are full time positions, a number that far exceeds any other numbers from rapidly growing industries, even Information Technology.
