The State of Ohio Manufacturing!

As we mentioned earlier this month, American manufacturing was at a two year high. In many urban centers across the United States – Houston, Detroit, Los Angeles – there is a growing resurgence as companies reshore or opt to hire more employees to meet escalating product demand. What about Ohio though? What is the overall picture for manufacturing in the Buckeye state?

Supply & Demand

By taking a look at the grand total of manufacturing jobs and resumes posted in the last year on Careerbuilder, we can get a good sense of the overall supply and demand. There are few cities or towns that have a greater supply than their demand with the exception of Lima – which has 418 job seekers to 324 open positions. Most have around 1.5 to 2 times the open positions available compared to their supply of talent. The Cleveland/Akron area has 3 times the amount of open positions and Sandusky has about 2.5. Though not every position is going to be filled by someone local (due to the occasional lack of qualifying skills, company cultural incompatibility, or other factors), the ratio is promising enough for market growth.

Aerospace & Aviation

Ohio is additionally faring well in the aerospace and aviation industry, adding critical components to the global supply chain. The Ohio Aerospace Institute, NASA’s Glenn Research Center, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and other small to midsized companies all call Ohio home. Companies like Airbus are spending billions with Ohio manufacturers and spent $5 billion with Ohio companies in 2012 alone – the aeronautics giant spent $13 billion total domestically that year. With the Ohio Aerospace Institute aiming to export $90 million worth of aerospace equipment to facilities in Canada, Europe, Brazil, and India over the next 3 years, there is substantial growth along the horizon.
