The 14 Basics of Great Interview Attire

While readying yourself for career questions and a discussion of the company during your job interview, it may be easy to overlook one simple thing: your appearance.

Most people have no trouble keeping up with basic hygiene but there’s more to it than just that.

The right interview attire sends out a message of confidence and awareness to hiring managers from the start.

Clothing – Though the interview attire you’re wearing shouldn’t be the centerpiece of the whole job interview, it plays a solid supporting part.

  • A conservative two-piece suit for men or women is the safest interview attire.
  • Keep visible skin to a minimum. Go for long socks, long skirts, and long sleeves.
  • Darker colors are preferable to anything bright (or even neon).
  • Wrinkle-free clothes show your attention-to-detail. Break out your iron or take your garment to a dry cleaner (days in advance).
  • For men, simple ties are the best option.
    • Anything too long gives the impression you’ve raided your dad’s closet.
    • Anything too intricate or off-kilter can make you seem unaware of social norms.
  • For women, earrings or jewelry are fine as long as they won’t be a distraction.

Shoes – Most hiring managers won’t be transfixed by your footwear but still keep these basics in mind when planning your interview attire.

  • Close-toed shoes are essential. Anything open-toed is too casual.
  • Shoes should be polished and kept up.
  • If the weather is bad, bring an extra pair: one to wear on your way there and another clean pair for the interview.

Grooming – The right interview attire isn’t just a matter of picking the right garments. It’s about tidy grooming.

  • Hair should be neatly groomed and styled. That goes for facial hair too.
  • Perfume or cologne can overpower your interviewer. Stay subtle or leave your designer scent at home.
  • Minimal makeup is best.
