Six Sigma and Other Top Certifications for Your Career

According to a study conducted by HR.com, 100 percent of employers surveyed said that certifications are preferred when considering new hires and internal promotions. They are the key to moving up in the manufacturing and engineering world.

As of now, these four certifications are the most in-demand, and often highest-paid, in 2014.

Six Sigma Green Belt

Since Motorola pioneered this manufacturing process in the mid-1980s, it has been implemented globally with great results. The process of identifying and limiting defects in products during the production stage is one of the best cost saving mechanisms in the manufacturing industry. Those who possess these skills are high in demand.

With an average salary of $109,165, this certification is great for professionals. Yet Green Belt is only the beginning. The ability to improve to higher levels (Black Belt and Master Black Belt) make this certification a great starting point for any manufacturing employee.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Are you ready to take the lead on projects? If you are serious about running the big show, a PMP certification is your key to doing so. From initial planning to closing, this certification teaches you to progress through the full lifecycle of projects. It is administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and boasts an average salary of $108,525.

Best of all, it is a versatile certification that is good for many industries. Professionals from manufacturing to construction and IT are best known to take the courses, which require 35 hours of training and 7,500 hours of experience (4,500 if you have a bachelor’s degree).

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

If you lack the industry experience to be a PMP certified professional, you can always look into a CAPM certification. This entry-level certificate will put you on the right path in your industry. Even if you have zero experience in project management, the PMI will still offer this exam.

The only requirements are a High School diploma (or secondary equivalent) and either 1,500 hours of project experience or 23 hours of project management education. It is a great first step for young professionals pursuing a PMP certification.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

If you’re into thinking long term, LEED is the best certificate for you. Since we entered the new millennium, builders and architects have been looking for new ways to construct more environmentally friendly buildings. These new building designs are higher in rent and offer greater occupancy at a reduced cost. Choosing this certification will surely put you on a sustainable career path.
