Are You Sabotaging Your Job Interview Before it Begins?

There is a lot you can do during a job interview that will affect your chances of landing the position. But are your actions before the interview ruining your chances? Use these tips to up your odds of getting the job before you even meet the hiring manager.

The 10 Minute Rule

Showing up late to a job interview is arguably the worst thing you can do. However, walking through the door 20-30 minutes before your scheduled time can be seen as an imposition. There’s no need to camp outside of the office like a gamer anticipating the release of a new console.

The golden rule for showing up before an interview is 10 minutes – no more, no less. It shows that you are responsible enough to leave yourself some wiggle room without seeming too desperate. If you are nervous about being late, arrive extra early and wait in your car until the appropriate time.

Compose Yourself

Never underestimate the effect your commute can have on your appearance. You may leave the house looking like a presidential candidate, but by the time you get to the interview you will likely resemble a stockbroker who has just lost it all. A windy day can leave you with an unwanted mohawk and your seatbelt can contort your gig line beyond recognition.

Before you get to your interview, duck into a bathroom and give yourself a once over.

The Pre Job Interview

The job interview starts the second you walk into the building, not when you meet the hiring manager in his or her office. Many companies use their front desk personnel, security guards, and even their janitorial staff as resources in the hiring process.

Greet everyone you meet with a smile and a friendly greeting. Don’t be too chatty, but don’t give anyone the cold shoulder either.

Maintain Radio Silence

Always assume you are being watched while in the waiting room. Therefore, checking phone for any reason will earn you an immediate demerit. Better yet, just leave the device in your car to rid yourself of the temptation of looking at it (even if it is only to check the time).
