Do’s and Don’ts of Interviewing for a Job

Mydomaine.com recently listed some expert advice when it comes to interviewing for a job. As they say in their online article, “Job interviews can be stress fests or fun, exploratory missions, depending on your mindset.” While this is very true, regardless of whether or not you passively interviewing or not, there are some clear Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to interviewing for a job.

  1. Don’t over rehearse- it is good to be prepared, but don’t try to memorize what to say
  2. Do mind your body language – signal confidence and leadership/ don’t slouch or cross your arms
  3. Don’t dominate – read the room and engage in the dialogue
  4. Do check the dress code – know where you are interviewing/ the culture there/ try to look the part/ be yourself but be modest
  5. Don’t exaggerate – this is pretty straightforward
  6. Do prepare thoughtful questions – know what to ask and try to get a sense for what the job will be like/ prepare ahead of time
  7. Don’t over-caffeinate – this could lead you to be too anxious and not relaxed enough in your interview
  8. Do follow up – send a follow up email/ practice good manners…show that you care
