Does Education Help Your Career?

There is a lot of back-and-forth with this topic. In this economy, many don’t believe that having a degree helps with the job hunt or promotions and it really just depends. For instance, to have a career in engineering, a degree is absolutely necessary. However, some would argue having a degree in Fine Arts is a waste. The key is location and demand for that career. New York City may be a great place to have an Art degree versus a small town in the Midwest. The logical thing to do is to think about the money spent on the college degree and the money to be earned in that career. However, there is a tiny percentage of the population who isn’t in it for the money- at all! If that is the case, then they should go for their dreams! If a person has a few careers in mind and can’t seem to choose, and they are all great choices, then it is best to compare salaries and the demand for that career in his/her area. It could be a good idea to look at larger cities across the country. Usually, larger cities have more options, but it goes back to the career at stake.

Here are a few of Salary.com’s “8 College Degrees with the Worst Return on Investment”:

  • Sociology
  • Fine Arts
  • Education
  • Communications

Here are a few of Yahoo.com’s “Seven Degrees that are Worth the Investment”:

  • Business Administration
  • Information Technology
  • Accounting
  • Nursing

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • 80 percent of people employed have a Bachelor’s Degree, rather than just a High School Diploma.
  • The more schooling you have, the better chance for a promotion and more money.
  • Remember- location and demand for the career!
