New Ways to Hire in the New Year

It’s a new year and a perfect time for new beginnings. No doubt you have your own list of business resolutions that require the right blend of positive and productive people. To restock your team with vibrant talent, you need to shed your bad hiring habits like a snake shedding its old skin and distinguish yourself from the competition. Here are a few ways to make 2014 the year of good hiring.

Know the ins and outs of your brand. Companies that regularly receive an outpouring of candidate responses do so because they know how to articulate what sets them apart. Unlike their competition, they don’t have that mannequin uniformity that would otherwise make them fade into the background. Their unique brand gets people excited and yours can too if you know how to give it some flair.

Don’t phone in your job ads. Good job advertisements stack up with the best marketing tools. They perfectly embody the essence of your company in a way that hypnotizes candidates and makes it imperative for them to apply. If writing isn’t your strong suit, don’t fret – find a wordsmith in your company to type it up or hire a firm to really sell your strong points. It’ll pay off with better talent.

Don’t limit your search to your website or job boards. The right job board can funnel great talent into your organization but it shouldn’t be your sole source of new candidates. Scout out industry events, review industry blogs, and network the way you would if you were searching for a job. These proactive measures can unearth a whole new layer of job seekers.

Offer referral bonuses. Get your employees involved in your candidate search. They might have a bead on family members, friends, and industry peers who might be perfect for your company. Plus, giving them an extra incentive makes their help feel worthwhile and encourages more unrestrained efforts.

Jump on candidates. The waiting game makes candidates anxious. If you leave employees feeling cold and alone during the hiring process, they’re going to start searching elsewhere. Now, that doesn’t mean that you should preemptively pull the trigger but you also shouldn’t drag out the process for weeks or months either.

Hire a recruiter. If you’re having a hard time finding the right person, reach out to a recruiter. They often have access to a vast number of experienced candidates who would otherwise fly under your radar. Your search time can be cut down significantly with a recruiter on your team.
